About the Project
In 2024, Mamou-Mani was commissioned to design an exceptional lighting diffuser for the Hyatt Regency Greenwich Hotel in New York. The aim was to create a visually captivating centrepiece for the hotel’s grand chandelier, blending modern aesthetics with cutting-edge fabrication techniques. Collaborating with @onehatonehand, the design concept took shape through meticulous planning and innovative material exploration.
The final design features a 15-foot-diameter ring composed of eight modular segments, each contributing to the overall fluid and harmonious form of the diffuser. These modules were intricately designed to not only diffuse light elegantly but also to complement the architectural features of the space, enhancing the atmosphere with a dynamic and modern appeal.
The carefully considered proportions and interplay of light and shadow transform the chandelier into a striking centrepiece. The seamless assembly of the modules was designed to ensure that the diffuser maintains its structural integrity while appearing lightweight and ethereal, a balance that is central to Mamou-Mani’s design philosophy.
By developing a specialised material that met both aesthetic and safety requirements, the project encapsulates Mamou-Mani’s commitment to sustainable and functional design. The resulting lighting feature is a testament to the studio’s innovative approach, where contemporary design meets cutting-edge digital techniques, creating an unforgettable visual experience for the Hyatt Regency Greenwich.
The Concept
At the heart of this project was a desire to challenge conventional lighting design, pushing the boundaries of what could be achieved through digital fabrication. The intricate geometric structure of the diffuser was inspired by natural forms, with each segment of the ring designed to diffuse light in a way that creates a soft, ambient glow throughout the space.
