About the Project

Ukiyo Handroll Bar is a refined culinary destination located in the heart of Covent Garden, London. Conceived as a space where architecture enhances the sensory journey of food, the interior blends tactile warmth with precision. Mamou-Mani was invited to design bespoke furniture and art pieces that would help define the identity and atmosphere of the restaurant while drawing inspiration from Taoist and Buddhist philosophies reflected in the concept of Ukiyo, the “floating world.” Rather than focusing purely on Japanese visual motifs, the project embraces a deeper spiritual framework tied to mindfulness, meditation, and mental well-being.

The project focused on key design elements, the Mandala High Stool and the Mandala Wall Art. These sculptural pieces are not just functional additions, but expressions of harmony, symmetry, and flow principles rooted in mandala geometry and Eastern philosophy. The stools offer ergonomic support while encouraging mindful seating, and the wall art serves as a contemplative visual anchor that nurtures a tranquil atmosphere.

All elements were designed using parametric modelling tools and fabricated by our sister company, Fab.Pub, through sustainable 3D printing techniques and eco-conscious materials. Thanks to digital fabrication, we were able to provide custom heights and functionality for the stools and continually refine them based on feedback from customers and staff. This iterative approach ensures the furniture evolves with the space and its community. The final result is a calm, immersive environment that supports both sensory and spiritual nourishment.

The Concept

The concept for Ukiyo, meaning “floating world” in Japanese, centres on creating a serene and elevated dining space where every element supports the culinary journey. Drawing inspiration from the symmetrical patterns of mandalas, Mamou-Mani developed the Mandala High Stool and Mandala Wall Art as sculptural elements that embody balance, repetition, and flow. These forms create visual rhythm throughout the space while providing both function and form.
