About the Project
Mamou-Mani commissioned the design, and Fab.Pub fabricated the bespoke chandelier for the living room of a luxurious chalet nestled in the Swiss Alps. The result is the Chalet Africain chandelier, a stunning centrepiece composed of 11 intricately designed 3D-printed pieces—three teardrop modules, two hourglass modules, and three diffusers. This chandelier serves as a contemporary reinterpretation of the Muqarnas, a traditional form of Islamic architecture known for its breathtaking geometric patterns.
Suspended above the island countertop, the chandelier is not only a visual statement but also a functional piece of art, with integrated lighting that bathes the room in a soft, warm glow. The diffusers, thoughtfully placed within the teardrop modules, scatter light evenly to create a candlelit ambience that enhances the intimate and luxurious atmosphere of the living space.
The design process for the Chalet Africain chandelier involved meticulous material exploration, focusing on sustainability and precision. While initial studies in clay and terracotta provided valuable insights, the final choice of PLA, a bioplastic made from fermented sugar, proved ideal for capturing intricate geometric detailing. This material allowed for the sharp, clean lines of the Muqarnas-inspired elements to be realised with high accuracy while also contributing to the eco-conscious ethos of the project.
Beyond materiality, the design plays with the contrast between the two module types—the hourglass and teardrop—blending organic curves and structured forms in perfect harmony. Colours were carefully selected to complement the chalet’s neutral, sophisticated interior palette, ensuring that the chandelier both stands out as a statement piece and integrates seamlessly into its surroundings. The bespoke nature of the design reflects the chalet’s high-end, luxurious atmosphere while also bringing a touch of cultural depth and modern craftsmanship to the space.
The Concept
The Chalet Africain chandelier’s concept centres on blending the rich tradition of highly ornate antique chandeliers, reinterpreting their grandeur through modern design and fabrication techniques. Inspired by Muqarnas, the chandelier reimagines these intricate forms in a contemporary setting. The 11-piece composition—featuring six half-teardrop modules, two hourglass modules, and three diffusers—creates a harmonious balance of contrasting shapes and forms.
The use of PLA bioplastic ensures precision and sustainability, while the integration of light within the teardrop modules adds both functionality and aesthetic appeal. The chandelier not only illuminates the space but also serves as a testament to the fusion of cultural heritage and cutting-edge 3D printing technology.
